Who is it that you’re trying to keep out of the safe?
This is the inverse of the question “what do you plan to keep in the safe?” and it can be just as important. Consider whether you’re keeping out would-be burglary, or if its simply pesky children or nosy co-workers. If the latter two are the case, than a safe with the highest security measures is probably a lower priority than a safe that is convenient.
Wall safes can be effective for those who seek convenient access and discretion. Free-standing safes, on the other hand, usually offer great fire protection and more storage space than wall safes would allow.
Do you really need fire protection?

Fire protection, however, will come with both additional physical weight and cost. Superior safe manufacturers will usually take a burglary safe and add a two inch amalgamate material, which is very fire resistant. Other safe companies may install drywall into the inner walls of the safe, resulting in a safe that, although fire resistant, is far less effective as a defense against burglars.

Do you have an alarm where your safe will be placed? If you already have a security system in place, you shouldn’t depend on it alone to guard your valuables.
Depending on how intelligent and skilled the robber is, any safe could be compromised, but an alarm system can reduce the time in which the robber can take your valuables. If you’re especially worried about burglars and robbers, a wall safe is probably not your best bet, as they can be easily accessed.
Consider, also, the average police response time in your area. If you have a home or office security system in place, they may know what the likely average police response time would be for a burglary incident. The general rule, however, is that if you live in a more isolated area, the police may take more time to respond.
